Social Media in Background Checking

Mintz Group managing partner Peter Lagomarsino just wrote an article in Executive Talent about how to review a candidate’s social media activity as part of a background check. Even as the amount of social media data surges, new laws are limiting the use of a candidate’s social media activity in employment decisions. Lagomarsino points out, “The envelopes in the mailbox at the end of your driveway are private, and the posts in your private Facebook inbox are private.” Reviewing the vast amount of social-media information requires online sophistication – to uncover potentially adverse information, and to do so within the bounds of changing laws.
