Randal Phillips, who runs the Mintz Group Beijing office, is a former CIA official with deep expertise on Asian issues. In a December 28 Washington Post article, he was quoted about the challenges of dealing with widespread corruption in China.
David Ignatius, the article’s author, calls this deeply entrenched culture of corruption “China’s greatest vulnerability.” Ignatius goes on to quote Phillips on the challenges U.S. businesses face navigating this problematic environment:
“Phillips says that he advises U.S. companies in China to make clear from the outset that they won’t pay bribes, and to hedge their bets in picking Chinese partners and patrons, given the political jockeying that’s taking place.”
